Last month I saw this book at a library sale and thought it looked promising.
It's been even more fun than I'd imagined. Calico has been reading this independently and doing as many of the activities as she can. There aren't many she's skipped. So far most have required only ordinary household objects.
This week's topic is hands. This morning she took out an inkpad, made and examined her fingerprints, then returned the inkpad and came back wearing a baseball cap to which she'd taped a small mirror. She tried to write her name looking only in the mirror and discovered that it was much harder than she expected. In fact, she wrote completely backwards! Next she pulled out a bucket, filled it with water, stuck one hand in a plastic baggie, then immersed both hands in the water to become aware of the action of the pressure sensors of your hand. A simple activity, but very interesting.
I'm looking forward to seeing the results of an activity from the last chapter which Calico hasn't yet completed: counting taste buds to distinguish "tasters" from "nontasters." We'll finally find out if the vegetable-lovers in the family really do have fewer taste buds! Being a "taster" will not be an excuse for not eating vegetables. Calico learned in another activity that we taste with our nose. So if a vegetable is disagreeable to your tongue -- hold your nose!
