First, she discovered that, in her words, her own tongue "looks like a strawberry." Her taste buds were distributed fairly evenly. She also discovered that her dad, noted sweet-lover and vegetable-disdainer, has copious numbers of taste buds. She couldn't count them all. He's definitely a Supertaster, therefore his sweet tooth and tepid interest in vegetables has a physical root. Calico and I have fewer taste buds, therefore she has no excuse for her own infamous sweet tooth. She is growing more open-minded about vegetables, though. My numbers were similar to hers, and I've been a lifelong vegetable-lover.
She also discovered that Gingham is a difficult subject. Gingham refused to participate in anything that involved sticking out her tongue. We hypothesize that she'll be a Nontaster since she has always loved such delicacies as onions, brussels sprouts, and broccoli.
To check your own taste buds you'll need blue food coloring and a round hole reinforcer. After applying the food coloring to your tongue with a cotton swab, allow it to fade somewhat. We found that if there's too much blue, the taste buds don't stand out enough and it's nearly impossible to count them.
Here's how we started. The taste buds aren't clear.
After a few minutes the blue faded enough to make counting the taste buds possible.
According to Exploratopia, nontasters have fewer than 10 taste buds within the circle of the hole reinforcer, tasters have 10-30, and supertasters have over 30.
Which kind of taster are you?
